How to Choose Color Scheme for Bathroom Decorating
The color scheme you choose for your bathroom will generate an atmosphere in the room and will emphasize the decor style you have chosen to exhibit.
Some colors have the ability to create a peaceful environment while others tend to shock the senses, and can actually give you a ‘kick-start’ to the day.
It always makes sense for your bathroom decor to relate in some way to your home’s interior decor. If the colors you use throughout your home are warm; sandy yellow and pastel in shade, featuring a bright color in your bathroom could look out of place.
To understand how colors work together, we will take a look at how they can be combined.
Firstly, if we take a look at the color wheel we notice that blue, yellow, and red (the primary colors) are all placed opposite one another in this wheel; in a triangle. Between blue and yellow is green, between red and blue is purple, and between red and yellow is orange.
These are the six major colors of the color wheel. When designers refer to the different color schemes used in decorating, they often use terminology that seems difficult to understand. The following will help you to understand some of the terms used.
A ‘Monochromatic’ color scheme is a color scheme that includes different tints or shades of one single color. This type of color scheme can be very soothing and can actually generate a mood of relaxation, as all these colors work together to ‘make sense’ which is one of the reasons we spend time relaxing, so that we can ‘make sense’ of everything.
An ‘Analogous’ color scheme features colors that are next to one another on the color wheel like red, red and violet, and violet and blue, or; green, green and yellow, and yellow and orange. This color scheme is found throughout nature; for example, in forests where different trees grow together displaying yellow, green and often orange leaves. Therefore this color scheme will create a balanced atmosphere in a bathroom.
When using the analogous color scheme you should make one of your colors more dominant than the other two are. For example, if you use violet as your dominant color, then you should use red and blue merely as complimenting colors in your design.
A ‘Complementary’ color scheme features two colors that are opposite one another on the color wheel; like blue and orange, red and green, and yellow and purple. This type of color scheme has been known to actually generate vibrancy and energy. Therefore, if you would like a bathroom that truly wakes you up in the morning, this color scheme will serve you well.
A ‘Triadic’ color scheme uses three colors found in a triangle on the color wheel; like orange, purple, and green; or blue, red, and yellow.
The ‘Neutral’ color scheme is by far the most commonly used color scheme in bathroom decorating. This color scheme includes all colors that are not found on the color wheel; like brown, grey, black, white, beige and so on.
The ‘Accented Neutral’ color scheme is also most popular in the decorating and design industry. This scheme features the use of neutral colors with one or two dominant colors; for example, beige, brown, white, and green and blue. This color scheme tends to create a natural atmosphere while the two dominant colors suggest a more specific environment; vibrant or calming.
‘Warm’ and ‘Cool’ color schemes are also widely used in decorating. To put it simply, warm colors are all colors around red in the color wheel, like yellow and orange, whereas cool colors are all colors around blue on the color wheel, like green and purple.
Warm Color Scheme
Cool Color Scheme
As their titles suggest; reds, oranges, and yellows (like the colors of a fire) suggest warmth; and the blues, greens, and purples (like a dark cool forest) generate a cool atmosphere. Warm and Cool color schemes are often used in conjunction with a monochromatic color scheme to create a desired effect.
These effects are also affected by your bathroom’s lighting, that you can read on How Lighting Affects Your Bathroom Decor.
