How Lighting Affects Your Bathroom Decor
Good bathroom lighting should always illuminate the frequently used areas in a bathroom. How your lights should be positioned will therefore depend on how the fixtures in your bathroom have been arranged.
Ceiling Panel Lights
In this picture you can see that this room features more than sufficient lighting. Using a panel light in the ceiling is a common choice for most homeowners, purely because these lights are relatively easy to install, and they serve their purpose well. Maintaining these panel lights however can be difficult, and finding the right bulbs is often a challenging task on its own.
The clever use of lighting behind the mirror is also very effective. It illuminates the entire mirror and also illuminates the vanity and sink area. The light colored walls reflect most of the light too. It creates a warm atmosphere, and at the same time is highly functional.
Here the use of these large side-mirror lights works very well. The light is subtle yet effective in the areas where it is really needed. As you can see, recessed lighting is also featured, in the ceiling above the bathtub, once again an example of functional lighting.
Using lights on the sides of your mirror works a lot better than using a light above your mirror. The reason for this being that a light above your mirror has the tendency to create shadows on your face, therefore the reflection you would see in your mirror (when it comes to putting on makeup and so on) may be slightly distorted. Using lights along the sides of your mirror therefore has superior benefits.
Recessed Lighting and LED Lights
This bathroom’s lighting is certainly modern. The use of LED lights is becoming popular among modern homeowners. Here, the LED light in the showerhead is a definite focal point and will make showering that much more fun, for sure.
Using recessed lighting is perhaps one of the best ways to illuminate your bathroom. As far as design goes, if you are creating a contemporary style in your bathroom, keeping your walls and ceiling free of protruding fixtures will be an advantage. When you install your recessed lighting you can ensure its effectiveness by positioning it directly over the fixtures or areas you need illuminated.
In this bathroom a small bar light above the mirror is also used, for close-up grooming.
Well-designed hanging lights are a great way to create a focal point in a bathroom. If one has high ceilings, hanging lights are also a good way to get light closer to the area that really needs it. While recessed lighting is also used here, the hanging light does most of the work when it comes to lighting up the bath area.
Chandeliers are commonly used ‘hanging lights’, and are used mostly in Victorian style bathrooms. Light shades for hanging lights come in a variety of designs, which means that this form of lighting is well suited to any bathroom regardless of the bathroom’s decor design or style.
